BAFFY: a wooden club with lofted face, the No. 4 wood; also known as Baffy Spoon.

BEFORE: the early form of the present-day ‘Fore!’

BELT: the early award to the British Open Champion (c. 1860-70).

B.G.G.A.: abbreviation for British Golf Greenkeepers’ Association.

BIG FOUR: a familiar name for the most important golf tournaments – British Open, U.S. Open, U.S. Masters, U:S:A: Professional Golfers Association.

BINDING: whipcord turns around club shafts.

BLADE: the striking end of the iron club, especially the front face.

BOBBY JONES PLAQUE: that at the seventeenth on the Royal Lytham & St. Anne’s course, where Jones played a marvelous shot in winning the British Open, 1926.

B.O.C.: abbreviation for British Open Championship.

BOGEY: in America, one over par on a hole.

BRASSEY: a wooden club used when the ball is lying favourably on the fairway; the No. 2 wood (also spelt Brassy)

BRITISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP:  that officially started in 1886, and open to amateur  golfers under very strict conditions.

BRITISH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP: the principal tournament in the U.K., instituted in 1894, and first played at Sandwich, Kent.

BULGER: a club having a face with slight outward protrusion.

BUNKER: an artificial obstacle on a golf course consisting  of a pit, usually filled with sand, dug into the fairway or a bank.

BUNKER CLUBS: the familiar name for the sand iron and the wedge.
